Advanced Course in Social Services and Mental Health
The Advanced Course in Social Services and Mental Health is a comprehensive course designed to strengthen an organization’s capacity from an operations and programmatic standpoint to provide emotionally responsive programs. The intended goals of the course are to improve participating organization’s capacity to serve youth more effectively by increasing awareness amongst staff of issues youth face on daily basis, infusing mental health competencies into practices, identifying programmatic supports, and linking the organization to wider health network.
Over the course of twelve sessions, each participant will analyze his/her own program in terms of its emotional responsiveness. Through a combination of lecture, case profiles and analysis, and individual project work, participants will:
- identify programmatic approaches to supporting youth;
- assess staff capacity;
- outline opportunities to strengthen staff skills;
- review policies and procedures around mental health;
- and identify referrals and system for such referrals.
Topics explored in course will fall into the following key categories: Interpersonal Violence, Working with Families, Children with Special Needs, Identifying Community Resources, Substance Abuse and the Role it Plays in Youth and Families, Creating Client Sensitive Program Management Systems, Working with Schools and Communities and a final session on case presentations.
